Ms Gabriela Firea graduated from the University of Bucharest, Faculty of Letters, with a degree in Philology – Information Science.
After graduating, she worked as a reporter, news editor and TV anchor and host, focusing mainly on economic and social issues.
As of early 2000, Ms Firea began to get involved in public administration and political life in Romania, as PR advisor for the prime minister and then appointed State Secretary, Head of the Communication Department, and Spokeswoman for the Government, one of her main responsibilities being to coordinate public communication for the Cabinet.
Between 2012 and 2016 she was a Senator in the Romanian Parliament, a member of the Commission for Culture and Media, and vice-president of the Permanent Commission of the Chamber of Deputies and Senate for relations with UNESCO.
In July 2016 Ms Firea was elected Mayor of Bucharest, coordinating the activities of the institutions coming under Bucharest City Council and serving over two million inhabitants.
Her political activities include being Spokeswoman for the Social Democratic Party, Vice-president of the Social Democratic Party, President of PSD Ilfov and Spokeswoman for the social-democratic group in the Senate of the Romanian Parliament.
Ms Firea has been awarded many distinctions and awards, among which: the Star of Romania National Order, Officer Degree, 2000; Romanian TV Professional Association (APTR) Award for “Best prime time anchor”, 2011; Romanian TV Professional Association (APTR) Award for “TV Star of 2007”; Romanian TV Professional Association (APTR) Award for “Best talk show”, 2004; and Bucharest Writers Association Award, 2001.
Ms Firea speaks English, French and Romanian.
